We had a terrific sailing day today, sailed off the hook in
Gloucester this morning after dory rowing, swim call, and
setting the Main and main tops'l at anchor. Stayed on a
starboard tack all the way into our anchorage here at Peddocks
Island in the Boston Harbor Islands, averaging 6-7 knots most
of the way.
After a beautiful clear night with stars
galore, we all awoke at 0600.
With three days onboard, the students are beginning to
adjust to boat living and jumped right into morning chores.
We completed the morning routine, and lowered the
dories and spent the rest of the morning rowing around
Gloucester harbor. Each
dory takes 4-6 students and requires complete teamwork to make
the dories move through the water correctly.
While some groups rowed, other students continued their
science projects and completed their final station.
After all the dories had returned and been hauled
aboard, swim call was announced and we all took a dip in the
chilly waters of Gloucester Harbor.
Before lunch we took advantage of the breeze
and sailed off the hook.
Students again ran the raising of the fore, the jumbo,
and the jib and we set off for Boston on a beam reach.
After lunch, the off watches began synthesizing their
science data and deciding how they would present their
information to the group.
They also began preparation for the evening program
party and talent show. Some
students went aloft and got a tremendous view of Boston from
the rigging. With
the good wind we made Boston Harbor by 1600 and dropped anchor
off the North side of Peddocks Island, the perfect place for a
party. After
dinner, we celebrated Matt’s birthday with a great big cake
complements of Laurie.
Evening program began as soon as the dishes
were completed. There were acts from each of the three watches as well as
individual performances.
There was singing from Kathryn and Sophie, a step dance
by Lilah and Leah, a poem by Matt, tango by Brittany and
Tiffany, a stand up routine by Greg, and a ballad by Heidi.
Each watch creatively shared stories about the trip
either through a skit or through a game.
The highlight of the evening was probably our MC Ryan
who announced all the acts in a black vinyl jacket.
It was a great end to a great day, and the crew has
been secretly discussing keeping these students onboard for
another week and heading for Bermuda.
Thanks to all the performers and Happy Birthday Matt!
