This
afternoon, 12 participants and 8 others boarded the Ernestina
for an afternoon sail out of Boston Harbor. The group comes for the Pelham Academy, a residential school
for teenage girls in Lexington, MA.
We got off the dock right away and the girls got right
to work helping set the sails.
Working together, we set the main, the fore, the jumbo,
and the jib. With
sails set, we headed away from the city past the airport.
The girls broke up into three groups and learned about
the lives of our ship with Traudi, getting a chance to see
below decks, the magic of simple machines with Steve, some
knots and splicing with Fred, and discussed what it’s like
to live onboard with Gretchen.
Many of the girls decided
they would enjoy staying onboard for a few days, despite the
difference between life at sea and life on land. Everyone had a great sail!
About 4
o’clock we began striking sails and heading back in towards
Fan Pier.
We want to thank Pelham
Academy for coming onboard. The crew enjoyed their enthusiasm and willingness to help and
hope we see them again!
