Beyond B.O.W.
A Smooth Sail for Sunday:
We awoke this morning to a
red-streaked sky and chilly breezes blowing from the West.
The watches hunkered into the Foc’sle for a delicious
breakfast of enchiladas, fresh-baked gingerbread, and homemade
granola. All
hands mustered around the aft cabin top for the last morning
of our trip, and began packing up personal gear before our
cleaning field day extravaganza.
The foc’sle field day crew finished the galley dishes
and rescued lost items found floating in the bilge, while the
fish hold crew scrubbed everything in sight (as well as a few
areas most often unseen!).
Strong hands helped set the
foresail, and weighing the anchor took many hands and hard
work, but we left our anchorage in Portuguese Bay off
Peddock’s Island at 0950.
A steady Force 3 wind filled our sails as Ernestina
ventured out beyond the Boston Harbor limits, enjoying brisk,
sunny weather and the kind of silence at sea that only a
sailing vessel can offer.
We sat down to lunch underway (a satisfying fish stew
and fried chicken) in two sittings.
After lunch Annie welcomed anyone interested to
experience a new and thrilling view of the Ernestina
from the bowsprit, and smiles beamed from faces all around.
The afternoon seemed to slip
by all too quickly as Boston’s skyline drew closer. As we
docked at Fan Pier in Boston and our trip came full circle, we
passed bags to the dock, took several group photographs, and
bid our farewells.
