Indian Head School
New Bedford State Pier
October 7, 2003

For the next three days the Ernestina will board the entire 5th grade class of Indian Head School for exciting day sails out of New Bedford. Today at 0930 the first group of 71 came aboard with lunch in hand. After leaving the dock the group was split into a Jumbo sail team and a Foresail team. With some instructions from the crew, the kids were setting sail like they were born to do it. Soon we were sailing with a light breeze into Buzzards Bay.

With the sails set the students got into six groups and went around the stations we had set up. The kids learned: water chemistry with Alison, plankton with Liz, knots and bracelets with Chris, navigation with Steve, Polly brought on some excellent plaints and animals for the kids to touch and learn about, and Lizzy, Heidi, Sharon, Traudi and Ben rotated around teaching how to steer and be on bow watch. With three stations in the morning and three after lunch, the students learned a lot in a short amount of time.

Before anyone was ready it was time to head home. We struck sail and the students did a great job helping fold them up. It was a good ending of a great day at sea.
