The first
member's sail of the season was a transit from
New Bedford to Woods Hole via Quicks' Hole.
Unfortunately, although 60 members signed up for
this one, it wasn't exactly a warm spring day
with a nor'easter coming in later on, so the
numbers dwindled to 25. You can see the track
overall and the closeup once the ship made it to
Dyer's Dock, part of the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute facility in Woods Hole.
Here's an email that came through early Monday
morning:
Hi, my
ten-year-old daughter Leonie and I were on board
the Mother's Day sail from New Bedford to Woods
Hole, as guests of the ship's doctor, Marcy
Franklin (thanks Marcy!). We are visiting
from England, and would like to email our family
and friends with the link. We had a
wonderful time on watch, when Leonie took the
helm just after Tarpaulin Cove on Naushon Island
[near the 's' in Naushon]. Here's what she
had to say about the day:
"I
think it's a very good design, the way the
ropes are set up and the way the lower deck
is set up, but I think they've been a bit
elaborate with the ropes, because they don't
actually need all the ropes to sail the
schooner - they have three ropes when you
only need one or two. I think having
that fourth sail is a good idea because you
get a lot more wind. Being at the helm
was easier than I thought it would be.
I think the heads are ingenious, the charts
are very detailed, and the crew are very
kind. I'm so very glad the weather held
until we docked. (I'm sure all the
ropes have a purpose...the one to pull dogs
in, the one to pull people in!, the seventh
rope in case the other six break...!!)"
~Leonie Gower~
Thanks for
a wonderful first-ever sailing experience, we'll
never forget it. ~Frances Harazi~
It was a pleasure to have you
aboard!
