Invest-in-Kids After-School Program Sail
Today we left the dock with students
involved with the Schooner Ernestina After-School
Programs and their families. The students are
from New Bedford public and parochial schools and
have been participating in the after school
programs since October. After leaving the dock,
we set the fore and jumbo sails and prepared the
otter trawl. Rob Hancock, one of our mates,
helped Jeremy, Ashley, and Alicia set the trawl
off Clark's Point. All hands pitched to haul the
net up onto the deck after a five-minute tow. It
took about 20 minutes to go through all the algae
to find the treasures of the trawl. Our ocean
visitors included a summer flounder, a yellow
tail flounder, squid egg casings, moon snail egg
collars, a decorator crab, a pregnant green crab,
a variety of algae, and the coolest skeleton
shrimp! Several of the
students who will be participating in an
overnight sail next weekend where great hands on
the ship and got used to boat checks and standing
watch. Many of the parents onboard got a first
hand look at what the kids have been experiencing
throughout the school year. It was such a
pleasure to have parents and sisters and brothers
of our students onboard!
