The Memorial Day Member sail, the first
of the season was delightful. Inland it was
sunny and warm for a good part of the day while
the light southerly winds held thick fog in
Buzzards Bay. We set the
four lowers in the harbor and motorsailed
out the channel with seventy three members
aboard. As soon as we got through the
Hurricane Gate, the visibility was reduced to two
tenths of a mile. You can see in the images to
the right you can see the Whaling City Rowing
Club whaleboat out for a row. If you want to
learn more about them go to their website at http://www.
whalingcityrowing.org/
Families and friends enjoyed
steering and sailing the ship, swapping stories,
and singing songs. A downwind run brought the
sunshine out once again as we sailed back into
the harbor where all hands struck sail. Michael
Platzer was aboard (shown in the middle image
with crewmember Traudi Coli). Michael efforts
were instrumental in the late 70's and early 80's
to result in the gifting of Schooner Ernestina to
the people of the United States. If not for
Michael the ship would likely not be flying the
Massachusetts/City of New Bedford flags today!
Once back into the dock a few
members stayed on to help raise the foresail at
the dock for the first Stars in the Spars show of
the season. The show was Captains
Courageous and a fine way to bring a
close to the long weekend.
