We departed Boston Fan Pier this morning
and are now enjoying a NE breeze out in Mass Bay
(1330 in the early afternoon). We spotted a 35
foot whale near the "B" Bouy, think it
was a Right Whale (very rare!) and notified the
International Wildlife Coalition in Falmouth by
Email. Small boats were harrassing the animal.
After a good lunch, learning stations continue
this afternoon. The second chart image is at Bumkin
Island at 1900. We sailed about 30 miles today, and
finished at Anchor off Bumkin Island in Boston
Harbor. The members of Troop 477 did well
handling the ship under sail; through the skinny
Hull gut (passing the 150 foot tall windmill
generating Electricity for Hull Street lights,
....swish, swish of the blades), and off the
shallows of Bumkin we struck headsails, and
dropped the anchor. A small sailboat was firmly
grounded just outside the channel, and we avoided
doing the same.
After furling sails, and song
and games on deck, all hands enjoyed a hot meal
from the galley. Table for 50??
By 1930, the 18
members of the shore party were taken to Bumkin
Island in the small boat. campers pitched tents,
and said goodnight to the schooner. Light rain
was falling over Boston Harbor. The 21
participants remaining on Ernestina were engaged
with singing chanteys after dinner, and they
turned in at dark. An anchor watch was posted. We expect
an early start in the morning.
