Open Enrollment Sail
Transit Boston to New Bedford
Day Three

Students performed some skits based on the history of the Ernestina/Morrissey while at anchor in Aucoot Cove last night. Then, this morning, after raising the Mainsail and Foresail, all hands enjoyed breakfast on deck followed by an all out field day in the holds. By 0900 the ship was clean, we hauled back the anchor and set sail across Buzzards Bay.

As the wind blew Southwest, the crew tacked the ship more than once to find the approach channel to New Bedford. After lunch all hands gathered on the quarter deck and shared their final thoughts.

We sailed into New Bedford Harbor at 1500 and struck sail just East of the State Pier. By 1600 the Schooner lay alongside Tonnessen Park again, home after a three week trip to Boston.

Parents and friends were there at the dock to meet us and soon all were ashore once again.

Text from Students follows...

Day One:
A Watch Write-Up (June 24)
After arriving at Fan Pier, we received our first sight of the Schooner Ernestina.  The new temporary crew members were oriented to their home for 2 nights and 3 days.  Then came hard work.  Our true sailing experience began when we raised sail.  Pulling out of Boston, to Gloucester Harbor for an otter trawl, our adventure was on its way.  While onboard, we went through the motions of re-acting  years of history of everything from doing some fishing to our daily watches.  At 11, we woke to a full moon over Stellwagon bank.  In an almost surreal atmosphere, we took our posts at watch.  Knowing our slumbering crew-members below depended on our every decision.  Hours later we returned to bed, exhausted after a truly unique experience at sea.

Day Two-
C Watch Write-Up (June 25)
After Sailing through the night, we woke to our first breakfast onboard the Ernestina.  The day was eventful.  We learned to navigate with Rob, and different rope crafts with Marty and Crista.  We collected various forms of plankton and studied them under a microscope.  After lunch, we ventured out onto the Cape Cod Shores in Dories.  And later jumped off the bowsprit for swimming.  After dinner, Angela led us in some evening activities.  As we turned B Watch Bancroft into Pamela Anderson, B-Watch Ian into Mary-Kate Olson, and Crista- Program Coordinator into Ozzy Osbourne.  We finished the night off with some singing and after hours party in the aft cabin~~sssshhhhh  DON'T TELL CAPTAIN WILLI!!!

Day Three-
B-Watch Write-Up (June 26)

We were anchored in a bay
So we couldn't sail away.

We Hauled up the Sails
And cleaned with Pails
And we will be in New Bedford today.
