Great twenty-four hour program with Dover
Boy/Cub Scouts! A calm day yesterday allowed for
the four lowers to be set and participants to get
oriented to the ship. Some learning about
navigation, how the ship works, what it's like to
live onboard, environmental implications of
a schooner were the activities the students
were engaged in. After supper an evening
program of skits losely based on
the history of the ERNESTINA made for some good
laughs. A view of aurora
borealis (northern lights) was a treat
for some on anchor watch. An early
morning filled with taking care of the ship
brought us back into Gloucester Harbor to the
fish pier. A great group makes a great
trip, short and sweet. See photos from this trip
posted yesterday.
Member Sail: Gloucester
to Boston Fan Pier
A group of 19 members joined
the ship at the fish pier in Gloucester for the
transit to Fan Pier, in Boston Harbor.
Forecasted light southwesterlies was
a discouraging outlook for the
transit. Despite a little hesitation the
four lowers were set and we were sailing full and
by trying to avoid the engine at all cost.
Setting the jib tops'l delayed the inevitable,
and finally we had to fire up and motor sail to
meet our schedule. It was a beautiful sail
with some wildlife to see along the way. A
harbor seal was poking his/her head about in
Gloucester Harbor and what we thought could be a
minki whale outside the breakwater were the
highlights of marine mammals. Dodging
traffic consisting of tankers and small boats
enjoying the weekend day, we finally made it
alongside to the fan pier. Thanks to
all the members for the hard work setting and
striking sail, and we hope to see you soon.
