Under the cover of darkness ERNESTINA and
her crew of members and permanent crew got
underway from the Boston Fan Pier bound for
Providence. There were some residual swells
from Hurricane Gustav in Massachusetts Bay and
the fores'l and jumbo were pushing us toward the
canal. Once into Buzzards
Bay the storm tris'l was put away into the aft
cabin and the main was set, along with the jib
and jib tops'l.
A quick ride over to Naushon
into the back yard of Captain Sophie Morse, and
relative Irving Forbes. Irving's father was
once the master onboard ERNESTINA when she was
chartered during the second world war.
We arrived in Providence on
friday the thirteenth at about 0500. There
were 12 members on the transit and many of them
will remain on the ship throughout the weekend to
help with the Providence Maritime Heritage
Festival.
