There
aren't many days in October, let alone the rest
of the year, that are as nice as this for an
evening sail. With a gentle NW'ly wind blowing we
set sail from Tonnessen Park on New Bedford State
Pier. After raising sail in the inner harbor just
after 4pm, we fell off and sailed out through the
Hurricane Barrier past Butler's Flat Lighthouse
and rounded Clarks Point before returning at 7pm. Many
thanks to Albert Lees and the employees and
friends of Lees Supermarket in Westport for
coming out for a sail. It was especially pleasing
for us to have Westporters out on the ship since
the director (and tonight's captain) resides
there (and often frequents the market). Check out
the Lees Supermarket website
for more about the store... they offer "Westport Cooks,"
a series of special appearances by some of the
regions best chefs, have some great sushi and
plenty of local produce and products offered!

It takes all the help we can get to raise the
mains'l, fores'l, jumbo and jib. Here the fores'l
goes up as the peak and throat halyards are
hauled.
More hauling... but once the sails were set we
carried them through the evening until our return
to the harbor.
It is amazing to think that Ernestina's 250
tons can be turned and guided by a few spokes (or
turns) of the wheel. Many came back to take a
turn at the helm during the sail....

Albert Lees at the helm. Perfect timing with
the sunset in the background.
It isn't every day that hors d'oeuvers are
offered to the helmsperson.....

sets and we sail along on a reach in the light
wind.
